I'm sure most of us enjoyed the movie that night. While we wowed and awed at the greatness of pixar and their amazing team of artists, I walked away with a very different message. A social message of the importance of being green, and not sitting on our fat asses, not moving until we literally lose touch of what is happening around us. A presentation of the dangers of being stuck in front of our computer screens (albeit a little exaggerated, but already happening around us in the office) until we literally lose the feeling of a human touch.
As we go about our daily lives, and as I observe the attitude of the younger generation today, I can't help but wonder if what I saw in the film is not THAT exaggerated after all!
I am talking about the mentality of "aiyah, one more plastic bag won't make too much of a difference" or "it's only one more styrofoam or plastic box, why are u making such a big fuss ?" or "never turn off monitor only what, how much electricity can it consume?"
I think we all know the basic principle of - every little bit counts. And where do those little bits come from? It comes from no one else but YOU!
Every plastic bag you reject, every plastic box you recycle (instead of getting the shop to give you a new one), each time you remember to turn off that switch - they all add up. It then becomes a question of convenience - are you willing to make that extra effort to bring your own cloth bag when you go shopping or buy your lunch? Will you run back into office just because you remembered you didn't turn off your monitor? If not, then what difference is there between us now and those refusing-to-move fat asses comfortably sitting in those automated hovercrafts we saw in the film?
Being green is not about paying lip service. It's about making a commitment to make a change, and sticking by it, even of it means taking that one small step out of the comfortable hovercraft we are in.
In the words of the then legendary Michael Jackson, "if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change"
